The only thing at one stage we could get while in prison at Boggo Road were felt pens, because there was paranoia about paints. So I decided to see how far I could take felt pens and see what I could do with them.
I started using them on letters that prisoners wanted to write to their families and they worked pretty well. However, the paper didn’t hold up to it, it would just run.
So when I found a heavier paper, again I think this was around the time I found the 100gsm paper, I was able to do the birds, the whole painting of the birds in pens, and that’s exactly what it is.
It was an exercise in felt pens.
